DIVINE NINE 5K UNITES MEMBERS OF BLACK GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATIONS

Chicago, IL. (January, 2017) – Sorority and fraternity members of predominantly Black Greek Letter

Organizations (BGLO) in Chicago, IL and Atlanta, GA; along with their friends and family, will unite to run or walk the Divine Nine 5K. Divine Nine 5K hosts it’s 3rd annual event on June 17th, 2017 in Jackson Park, Chicago, IL and 2nd annual event on June 10th, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. Participants will walk or run in support of health and wellness and to raise money for undergraduate scholarship funds. Registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. with an official start time of 8:00 a.m and 8:30 a.m. respectively.

Community partnerships among the BGLO are not uncommon; however, this is the third time the organizations have collaborated to host a 5K event of its size. When asked how she came up with the idea for the event, Executive Race Director of Divine Nine 5K, Neecy Roney stated, “I wanted to introduce an event where all of the Divine Nine organizations came together to not only demonstrate health and community services initiatives, but also collectively raise funds for a dynamic cause that is a common goal for all the BGLOs.”

Members of the organizations are urged to gather their fraternity brothers and sorority sisters and show up in paraphernalia to showcase their pride and affiliation. Although the DN5K will celebrate membership in the nine largest BGLO, family members and friends are encouraged to come out to support the event and participate in the races. Both seasoned racers and beginners can all have fun completing the 5K. “We want people of all fitness levels to participate in the race. The key is to get moving, do community service and have fun while getting fit. The Divine Nine 5K is the perfect opportunity,” explained Roney.

In addition to the race, participants will have a chance to fellowship and experience exhibition performances.

The post-race party is expected to keep the energy going and the spirit high. “This event will be amazing and all participants will experience fellowship, unity and sense of accomplishment,” Joel Head, President of NPHC-Chicago.

Money raised for the 5K supports scholarship funds for local NPHC programs. BGLO, all founded by college students, have a rich history in scholarship, service, sisterhood, brotherhood and making a positive impact in the community. Due to this, the collaborating organizations felt that helping a deserving student attend college was a great fit for the event.
